Throughout The Wasteland the reader has to ask the following questions: is the line spoken, overheard, remembered? In a sense the voices move between bodies, over space, through time and even overstep specified mythical boundaries. Thus, new parallels and new possibilities open a different understanding of reality itself. The putative reality of the golden Jazz Age is the background of The Great Gatsby.
